Labs

Games, consulting, and software with strong opinions.

RippleRoot Labs ships indie video games, takes on AI and robotics consulting projects, and writes the occasional small library.

What's in Labs

Labs is the umbrella for everything technical at RippleRoot. Each subset has its own pace and its own discipline. Games and consulting are open for business today; the open-source side keeps moving as we have time for it.

Consulting — work with us

RippleRoot Labs is the consulting arm of a small, two-person shop. We're early into doing this for hire, and that's part of why we might be a fit for a project that wants to feel close, not corporate. If it touches code, AI, robotics, or the unglamorous wiring that makes a small business legit on the internet, we can probably help. If we can't, we'll say so.

What we do

We do it all. AI/ML strategy and pipelines, robotics, on-device inference, fractional CTO, websites, Google Workspace, SEO, all the unglamorous wiring that makes a small business legit on the internet. If it touches code or a server, we can probably help. If we can't, we know who can.

A favorite kind of project: helping local farmers use AI and robots. A weather model that tells you when to plant. A vision system watching a row of seedlings overnight. A small custom dashboard that beats a spreadsheet. Nothing about that is glamorous — it's just the right tool finally arriving on someone's kitchen table.

Who we are

  • Scott Carroll — getting paid to write code since the late nineties. Stops along the way: Michigan Tech, Amazon (Alexa's intent control plane, 35 ms at 3.5k TPS), Plenty (hierarchical actor systems for vertical-farm robots), VERSES (the event-driven platform that ran their Active Inference agents). Currently a senior engineer at Cypris and principal architect of RippleRoot Labs. Built Orpheus, an open-source wildlife-monitoring station that lives on an NVIDIA Jetson in his garage. Writes at As Above Silicon. LinkedIn GitHub
  • Colleen — creative director and photographer. Makes the deals. Owns the visual side. Contributes to delivery — more technical than the average "non-engineer" partner; part of most architecture conversations, not just the visual ones.

How it works

We scope projects together. Most are fixed-scope; some become retainers. We don't publish a rate sheet — every project is different, every customer is different. Reach out and we'll figure out if we're a fit. If we're not, we'll say so.
